Vaitharani, borrowing from Steven Dewitt’s Freaknomics, is about the ‘polarity between morality and economics’. It is about an ascetic who never spoke but seemed to have mysterious powers to heal illness. One day, after he disappears from the scene, a prostitute and her agent build an elaborate myth around the missing hermit, turning his hunt into a religious pilgrimage, rather, a veritable cottage industry. Like the parched earth and muddy waters, the Hindu priest, pimp, prostitute and local traders in Vaitarani are shown to be treacherous and ruthless, eager to make a living of the ascetic’s disappearance. The film was shot in the unpredictable and hostile marshland of the Sunderbans and the location becomes a character in the film. |
