SRFTI is a fully funded autonomous institution under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, run by a Society constituted by the Government of India. The Society, headed by a President, runs the Institute through a Governing Council (GC), which includes, in addition to the experts in the field of cinema, officials of the Ministry as ex-officio members and representatives of ex-students.The Governing council is responsible for overall superintendence and management of the Institute. The Society, Governing Council and Standing Finance Committee have officials of the Ministry of I & B as ex-officio members representing the Government. Academic Council(AC), constituted by GC, consists of domain specialists in addition to Dean and HODs of the Institute and representatives of students and alumni. AC is mandated to oversee all the academic and pedagogy-related issues. Director, Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, acts under the guidance and directions of the GC and assisted by Dean and Registrar for academic and administrative function respectively.
Director
Himansu Sekhar Khatua is an Indian filmmaker, educationalist and journalist. He directed the national film award-winning movies Sunya Swarupa and Kathantara in 1996 and 2005, respectively. He served as the managing director of Kalinga Media and Entertainment Private Limited (KMEPL) as well as the CMD of Kalinga TV, a news channel, and KNews Odisha, a digital platform.
After receiving his professional training in cinema from the Film and Television Institute of India, award-winning filmmaker Himanshu Sekhar Khatua delved deeply into the domain of filmmaking. He relocated to Mumbai in the 1990s to work as a professional Sound Recordist, but after a year he made the decision to return to his native Odisha to do something for his own State. He did the sound design for Indradhanura Chhai (Shadows of the Rainbow).
His debut film, Shunya Swarupa (Contours of the Void), took him to international film festivals including Rotterdam (Netherlands), Kinotavr (Russia), Pesan(Italy). Gothenburg (Sweden)and Valencia (Spain). The film won many state and national awards, including Best Regional Film in Oriya. His second film, Kathantara (Another Story), about the 1999 Odisha storm, won eight state awards. The film won best feature at the 53rd National Film Awards in 2006. His third feature film, “Matira Bandhana'(The Inheritance) based on ‘Trunk of Ganesha’ by Padma Shri Jayanta Mahapatra is a one of its kind movie which garnered huge appreciation in film festivals. His fourth feature Krantidhara (Coup de Grace), received the Asian Excellence Awards in South Korea. It got rave reviews for portraying issues of women’s empowerment.
He has been a writer, film festival jury member, and film festival organizer. His academic and administrative journey started from the State Government Institute BPFTIO. Odisha as a senior faculty. He shifted to KIIT University as a senior member (Board of Directors) to establish three schools, School of Film, School of Fashion and School of Mass Communication. He played a vital role in introducing Filmmaking education at University level. He has simultaneously displayed commendable excellence in filmmaking, excellent leadership in the media sector, and the development of new talent for the film industry.
He has taken charge as the Director of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, a premier film institute in South Asia under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.

Composition
The President of the Institute shall act as the Chairperson of the council
1. The President, to be nominated by the Central Govt.
2. Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India, dealing with films.
3. CEO, Prasar Bharati or his/her nominee not below the rank of DDG.
4. Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor in the Min. of I&B, Govt. of India or his nominee not below the rank of DS.
5. Managing Director, National Film Development Corporation.
6. Director, FTTI, Pune.
7. Three experts nominated in their individual capacity by the Central Govt. to represent the activities of the central Govt. in the fields of Education, Cultural, External Affairs, Science & Technology or Electronics.
8. Five persons of eminence connected with Films, Television, Education, Journalism, Literature, Fine Arts, Dramatics, Performing Arts etc. to be nominated by the Central Govt.
9. Three persons from among the alumni of the Institute or the former Institute to be nominated by the Central Govt.
10. Director, Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata.
11. Such other person as may be nominated by the Central Govt. or as may be co-opted by the Institute in accordance with prior directions of the Central Govt. for such period as the central Govt. may prescribe.
