Clapstick

Clapstick, an biannual film festival organized by SRFTI, is a showcase of student’s work from film schools all over the world. Bringing together films made in different socio-cultural spaces by some of the most promising young film making talentsin the world today, the festival offers a peek into the future of Cinema. The variety of content and innovative style of visual storytelling would definitely inspire and motivate young filmmakers and enthusiasts seeking exposure to the latest trends in film making today.Apart from showcasing the best and most exciting student films from across the world, Clapstick also provide a platform for various stakeholders in Cinema to come together to brainstorm on emerging trends and challenges in Cinema. Dozens of students from all over the world, industry representatives, academics, journalists come together at SRFTI during the festival. Events like Masterclasses, Open Forums, etc. provide acontext for structured exchange of ideas, while the wide open spaces on the campus provide the perfect setting for stimulating debates and discussions over endless cups of coffee.

Clapstick – 2022

Clapstick the International Students’Film Festival, showcasing films made by Film and Media institutions from all across the world in recent years including national film schools and others institutions was organized by this institute from 25 – 27 March, 2022. Renowned Actor Shri Dhritiman Chatterjee, who has immortalized numerous characters with his powerful acting performances, was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Ceremony on, 25.03.2022. He also announed the winners of the short film festival organised by SRFTI as part of the birth centenary celebration of Shri. Satyajit Ray.

The focus of the festival was “Films from Israel”

Mrs. Neerja Sekhar, Addl. Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India visited SRFTI Kolkata for #Clapstick festival. She visited festival venues, departments and reviewed various activities of the Ray Centenary Celebrations.

On 26.03.2022 Rada Šešić, a prominent Filmmaker-Festival Programmer-Critic-Lecturer from The Netherlands, took an online Masterclass on the topic “How to Pitch a Film at the New CRT.
A cultual progamme was organized by the students of 18th Batch Film and 4th Batch EDM on the 2nd deay of the Clapstick.

Ms. Shweta Venkat Matthew, well-known for her exceptional editing work in films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Newton’, ‘That Girl in Yellow Boots’, ‘Supermen of Malegaon’ and ‘Haseen Dilruba’, taken a Masterclass on “Negotiating Narratives”, at the New CRT, SRFTI on 27.03.2022.

Closing ceremony of Clapstick witnessed the spectacular musical performance by The band ‘Kolkata Kalling’. Ms. Neerja Sekhar, Addl. Secy. Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India graced the closing ceremony of the Clapstick as the Chief Guest and gave an inspiring keynote address. She also launched an Activity e book “Magician called Ray” as part of birth centenary celebration of Shri satyajit Ray.

Renowned actors and artists spoke at length about their association with Ray, Ms. Aloknanda Roy, Shri Kalyan Chatterjee, Shri Pradip Mukherjee and Shri Debojyoti Mishra joined a pannel discussion at Clapstick, moderated by Prof. Ashoke Viswanathan.

A live demo and a technical class by Anindo Basu on Cinematography and Photography was organized in association with Canon on the occasion of Clapstick that saw the participation of students of SRFTI and film-enthusiasts.

Clapstick – 2019

Clopstick – 2019, the three-day lnternational Students’ Film Festival was organised by SRFTI from 31 st January to 2 rd February 2019. ln this festival 25 film schools from all over the country and abroad participated; 100 student-made Short Films, Documentaries, and Animation Cinema were received by SRFTI and selected for screening on the three days. Mr M S Sathyu, renowned Film & Theatre Artiste and Padma Shree awardee, was the Chief Guest at the inauguration of Clapstick – 2019.

Mr Sergey Akopov, Russian Cinematographer from VGIK, was also present at the inauguration. He later conducted Master Classes. The three-day event had panel discussions, film screenings, and
master classes. The festival booklet was released by Mr Sathyu at the inauguration. ln the opening ceremony on 3L January-2019, two Short Films were screened – Moo Tuki directed by Suchana Saha, 14th Batch student of Animation Department of SRFTI, which has picked up at least four national and international awards, and Roce Doo directed by Wu Hai Yi from Beijing Film Academy.

The crew members were present in the ceremony to discuss about their films.

Apart from the screenings, the following events were held during Clapstick 2019:

1. Panel Discussion on’Streaming Cinema’was held on l February 2019, where Mr Devashish Makhija, acclaimed filmmaker, Ms Bina Paul Venugopal, eminent Film Editor, and Mr Saibal Chatterjee, renowned film critic were the panellists.

2. To create a cultural environment for the festival, a Sambalpuri Dalkhai Folk Dance ‘Our culture our identity’ was performed by Artistes of Sambalpur. And ‘Pattachtra’ was performed by Chitrakar (pattachitra artist) Gura Pada Chitrakar. Both the performances
were staged at the Open Air Theatre of SRFTI.

Clapstick – 2017

Clapstick the International Students’Film Festival, showcasing of films made by Film and Media institutions from all over the world in recent years including national film schools and others institutions was organized by this institute from 27th to 29th, January, 2017, and in opening ceremony, Shri Shatrughan Sinha, Hon’ble MP was the Chief Guest and inaugurated Clapstick -2017 where Shri Gautam Ghosh, eminent film maker, Shri Partha S. Ghosh, former Chairman of this Institute and other dignitaries were also present.

The following events were held during Clapstick -2017.

i) In the opening ceremony 7 short films out of 4 films made by SRFTI students and 3 films made by National Film and Television School (U.K) were screened after inaugurating the festival.

ii) The other Master class was on ‘Turkish Cinema and Women: ‘An Equivocal Relationship of Love’ conducted by Gonul Donmez-Colin from 4.15 pm to 5.45.pm. where a large number of students took part in the mester classes.

Clapstick 2014

Clapstick 2014 was held between 28th and 3rd June 2012 along with NSFA 2014.

Clapstick 2012


Clapstick 2012 was held between 1st  and 3rd June 2012.

Calspstick 2012 started with the felicitation of Mr. Girish Kasaravalli by Mr. Uday Kumar Verma, Secretary to Ministry of I & B, Government of India.

While the Director of SRFTI Mr. Sanjay Pattanayak outlined the highlights of Clapstick 2012, Mr. Girish Kasaravalli  spoke about the freedom of cinematic expression he enjoyed during his  own student days  at FTII, Pune. The inaugural function was also graced by  Mr. Basu Chatterjee.
