The film unfolds against a disturbance-prone Manipur. The story is about a woman weaver going through hard times as her husband, a wanted man, has gone underground. When her young son is injured and put in a hospital, her vulnerability attracts male attention. Kumar does not seem to belive judgments, instead tries to make sense of the situation from the points of view of the women, the husband and the other guy. He seems sympathetic to yet detached from the situation he is taljing about, more interested in the unexpected turns one’s life might take at the time of political intrigue, rather than politics itself. Says Shankhajit Biswas, who edited kumar’s previous films: I was already aware of the socio-political backdrop of the film and participated in its making from the script stage till the end of post-production. The makers of Along the way wanted the film to reflect the slow paced, languorous rhythm of Manipuri life. At the editing stage we found the film was running very fast, recalls Biswas. So we decided to keep a few shots almost till the flash frame, and use fade – ins and fade outs between scenes instead of cuts to slacken the pace. |
