SRFTI Alumni Light Up FIFF 2025 Iran: ‘Appuram (The Other Side)’ Makes History in Malayalam Cinema
Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI) is bursting with pride as two of its distinguished alumni, cinematographer Rakesh Dharan and sound designer P Saanu, have etched their names into the annals of Malayalam cinema. They marked their creativeness in the feature film Appuram (The Other Side), which has been officially selected for the 43rd Fajr International Film Festival (FIFF) in Iran, competing in the prestigious Eastern Vista section – a curated showcase of outstanding Asian cinema.
Appuram becomes the third Malayalam film ever to receive this honour and the only Malayalam entry at FIFF 2025, marking the first Malayalam film selected in the Eastern Vista section of the Fajr International Film Festival 2025. The selection underscores the global reach of SRFTI alumni in Malayalam film and showcases SRFTI alumni in Malayalam film, reinforcing the institute’s commitment to nurturing world‑class talent. Rakesh Dharan’s evocative cinematography and P Saanu’s immersive sound design have captivated festival jurors, proving that meticulous craft can transcend language barriers.
This recognition is a testament to the rigorous training and mentorship our faculty provide. We are happy to see our alumni shine on an international stage and proud that Appuram represents the vibrant spirit of Malayalam cinema.”
The achievement not only elevates the film’s creators but also reinforces SRFTI’s reputation as a launchpad for groundbreaking storytelling. Congratulations, Rakesh and Saanu – the world is watching!
