SRFTI Alumni Contributes National Award-Winning Film ‘Sunita’: Celebrating Creative Excellence at the 72nd National Film Awards

The Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI) proudly celebrates another milestone in the 72nd National Film Awards. Sunita, directed by Yumnam Ajit Singh, won the Best Manipuri Film award at the 72nd National Film Awards (2026). Our alumni play a pivotal role in the success of Sunita, winner of the Best Manipuri Film award at the 72nd National Film Awards 2026. This achievement highlights the strength of SRFTI’s multidisciplinary cinematic education and the lasting impact of its graduates on Indian cinema.

Our four talented alumni whose creative expertise shaped this project. Abison Yumnam served as Associate Director, while Hiranmoy Gogoi contributed as Editor and Executive Producer. Both are alumni of the 3rd batch of the Electronic and Digital Media (EDM) wing, specialising in Direction & Producing and Editing, respectively. The film’s striking visual language was crafted by Nihal Bhandari, Cinematographer, with Meenakshi Soman, Assistant Cinematographer—both graduates of the 16th batch of the Cinematography Department in the Film Wing.

Their collective achievement reflects the collaborative spirit, technical excellence, and creative vision nurtured at SRFTI. The institute continues to prepare filmmakers with the skills to excel across every aspect of cinematic storytelling.

The recognition of Sunita at the National Film Awards is not only a celebration of outstanding filmmaking but also a testament to the power of teamwork and professional training. It reinforces SRFTI’s growing legacy of producing filmmakers who contribute meaningfully to Indian cinema, regional films, and the evolving landscape of visual storytelling.

Congratulations to Abison Yumnam, Hiranmoy Gogoi, Nihal Bhandari, and Meenakshi Soman. Your achievements inspire the entire SRFTI community and encourage the next generation of filmmakers to dream boldly, collaborate passionately, and tell stories that leave a lasting impact.
