The Department of Cinematography, established under the guidance of the legendary Shri Subrata Mitra, strives to uphold the benchmarks set by his pioneering contributions to cinematographic practices. Committed to developing cinematography as a technical and creative expertise, the department emphasizes both theoretical and experimental approaches, fostering a collaborative spirit in filmmaking. Students are encouraged to showcase their skills in professional-scale productions through their final dissertation projects. Equipped with high-end cine cameras, DSLRs, industry-standard lighting and grip equipment, two studio floors, CRT classrooms, a CC setup with advanced computers, and a still photography lab, the department offers a robust learning environment. The faculty, with strong theoretical and practical knowledge, guides students to excel in today’s dynamic cinematic landscape.

Programme Specific Objectives

The cinematography programme offers a comprehensive foundation that blends aesthetic, scientific, and technical knowledge to equip students with the skills necessary to excel in filmmaking. Spanning four semesters, the programme emphasizes the development of logical reasoning and creative decision-making, both essential for crafting visually compelling narratives. Students engage in hands-on exercises and workshops, mastering UHD cinema camera technology, complex camera movements, studio and location lighting, and advanced digital cinematography tools. Under the mentorship of industry professionals and experienced faculty, students combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience, preparing them to tackle real-world cinematography challenges in both controlled studio environments and dynamic on-location shoots. By the end of the programme, graduates will be fully confident in their ability to create and execute high- level cinematographic projects, ready to meet the demands of the industry with creativity and technical precision.
