Special screening of Eleven Miles & Memories of Milk City

Aesenal on locatio the Kolkata Edition

Arsenal on Location – The Kolkata Edition has made a mark at Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI) to host a historic evening in its Main Auditorium, where two freshly restored gems – Eleven Miles and Memories of Milk City – lit up the screen as part of Arsenal on Location – The Kolkata Edition. The special event, co‑organised with the Goethe‑Institut Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata, gave students, faculty and film lovers a rare glimpse into the art of film restoration and preservation.

Markus Ruff, Head of Archive Projects at Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst, walked the audience through the meticulous film restoration process, explaining how fragile reels are digitised, cleaned and remastered without losing their original texture. Indian writer‑filmmaker Ruchir Joshi joined the conversation, sharing insights on why preserving Indian classics matters for future generations and how restored works can spark new creative dialogues.

The screening was more than a movie night; it was an immersive workshop on preserving cultural heritage and a celebration of Indian cinema’s rich legacy. SRFTI’s commitment to delivering world‑class film education shone through as attendees asked questions, debated the technical challenges, and imagined how they might contribute to the field.

By bringing together international experts and local talent, SRFTI once again proved that it is a hub for innovative film practice, where history and contemporary craft converge.
