About the department

Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute is one of the few existing film schools which have been produc-ing seasoned professionals in Sound Recording and Design. Students are trained in on-location re-cording, studio recording, film dubbing and sound mixing on state-of-the-art consoles.

Students develop a keen ear for their aural environment and learn to appropriate the same for images through location sound recording, audio post-production, and sound design.

The course in Sound Recording and Design in-cludes intense exposure to the Indian film and music industry in the form of numerous workshops conducted by eminent professionals.

Course Duration

3 Years Divided into 6 Semesters.

Eligibility Criteria

Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline.Physics is required in 10+2 level.
Candidates successful in the Joint Entrance Test (JET) will be called for Orientation and Interview.
Final merit list will be prepared on the basis of written examination(JET), orientation and interview subject to qualifying in Medical test.

M.Sc (Engineering) in Sound and Vibration from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; Post graduate diploma with specialization in Sound Recording and Sound Engineering from FTII, Pune.

Worked as a Music Recording Engineer for Albums and Films for Six years. Worked as freelance sound recordist for documentary films on 16 mm and television programmes.

Worked as a research fellow under Marie Curie Research Fellowship Programme in Miskolc University, Hungary.

Taught as a guest faculty in the Department of Mass Communication and Videography in St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta  ,RoopKala Kendra, Calcutta; member of the State Level Core Committee, Mass Education Extension Directorate, Government of West Bengal; member of the Board of Studies at KIIT, Bhuvaneshwar, Orissa.

M.A.; Post Graduate Diploma in Sound Recording and Sound Engineering from FTII, Pune.

Music recording engineer in Suraj Ka SatwanGhora (Dir: Shyam Benegal); location sound recordist in Sanshodhan (Dir: Govind Nihlani); audio post production in Phir Teri Kahani YaadAayi (Dir: Mahesh Bhatt); re-recording engineer in Probhu Nosto Hoye Jai (Dir: Agnidev Chatterjee) and other films and TV programmes;

National Award (Rajat Kamal) in 1998 for Best Audiography.

Worked as Member of Syllabus Committee at RoopKala Kendro, Calcutta; External Examiner for the Department of Mass Communication and Videography in St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta , member of the interview board for selecting faculty members of Biju Pattyanaik Film & Television Institute, Orissa.

Post Graduate Diploma in Audiography from SRFTI, Kolkata

Worked as a sound recordist / designer for 7 years in every format in Audio Visual format ranging from feature length to television commercials. He has done Sound of Joy (Sound Designer), Sachin a billion dreams (Location sound recordist) Guddi ki gun, Bollywood Diaries to name a few.

Three years diploma in Sound and T.V. Engg. From Biju Pattanaik Film & Television Institute of Orissa.

Worked as Sound Recordist for Tara Bangla Pvt Ltd. In 2004. Worked as Sound Recordist for Zee News Chattisgarh in 2007.

Worked as a Demonstrator in F.T.I.I Pune in 2011

The department of Sound Recording and Sound Designing is equipped with state of the art equipment to prepare the students for meaningful contribution to the film industry.

The students enjoy the following facilities:

Studios for mixing, music recording, dubbing using Protools workstations, multichannel mixing consoles with high-end microphones and speakers.

Digital audio workstations for track laying/sound designing using Protools workstations.

Multi-track portable mixing consoles and recorders including shotgun, and wireless microphones for location recording.

Classroom with surround sound previewing facility.
